How Did We Get Here?

 

The credit union idea was born in 1849 in a small town in Germany where the residents needed a financial system that would respond to their needs. The idea caught on and spread to the United States.

 

In 1936, workers at the Stearman Aircraft Company opened an employees’ credit union. Each worker deposited $5.00 plus a 25 cent membership fee. In 1941, Stearman changed its name to Boeing Aircraft and the Credit Union was named Wichita Boeing Employees Credit Union.

 

In 1989, a new building was opened on South Oliver and the name was changed to Boeing Wichita Employees Credit Union. With membership opened to the public in 1994, we simply became Boeing Wichita Credit Union (BWCU). We now serve 17 counties in Kansas.

 

In 2009, BWCU changed its name to Meritrust Credit Union and unveiled a new logo.

 

As of 2009, Meritrust has 17 traditional branches in and around Wichita including branches in Derby, Andover, Haysville and Lawrence, with more on the way. Our Triad Administrative building, located at 8710 East 32nd Street North in Wichita, made way for much-needed expansion room.

 

Thanks to our member-owners, the Credit Union has thrived, both in prosperous and adverse times, on a foundation of stability and trust. With the commitment of our member-owners, we will continue to grow in the future.
